Let results speak louder than dollars spent. With the right knowledge and the correct investments, it's easily possible to create outstanding professional mixes without spending more than your college tuition. That's the philosophy I run by. With an engineering background, a passion for music, and many years of experience performing in and directing a cappella, I cut right to the chase and give you the recording and mixing quality you expect without all the overhead of a corporate structure.
Recording is my passion, and is done straight out of my own home--but that doesn't mean I skimp out on professional equipment. If you're at all concerned about the quality of a home-studio recording, just take a listen to the clips using the flash player above or using the "Listen/Download" menu link. If you want to hear more, just shoot me an email at recording@jownow.com.
I want to do work I can be proud of, so I'll put every last bit of effort into making your project perfect. And at a pre-determined per-project rate instead of an hourly rate, we can spend as much time as needed or desired to add those finishing touches without worrying about compromising quality to meet a budget.
The recording process is pretty staight forward. First the music director / arranger / other representative of your group will come help set up the track. This involves setting up the guide track (usually a MIDI of the arrangement, a live run-through, the original song, or simply a roughly played piano track with a tempo click), deciding tempo, and any other misc. stuff that needs to get done for that song before we start recording. Then we get your group in for recording. Recording is done individually for better control and quality. Again, listen to a couple clips for samples of the end result--everything above was recorded using the same method.
Once all the background tracks are recorded, we mix and edit. Using as much or as little studio post-production "magic" as you're looking for in your album, we take the raw tracks and turn them into a rockin' mix. Again, with a per-project rate we can spend as much time as you want perfecting the nuances of the song to get the quality just where you want it to be. Frequently throughout this stage there are additional ideas for extra incidental parts to record and add to the mix that add that extra layer of awesomeness to a song.
After that we bounce rough mixes and comments back and forth until the final finishing touches have been put on the track. Then it's off to mastering & duplication. Talk to me if you don't know where to go for these services, and we'll work out what's best for what your group needs.
That's pretty much it. I try to keep myself as accessible as possible throughout the whole process, so never hesitate to shoot me an email of a phone call for any questions, concerns, or requests.
I'm currently running a Pro Tools M-Powered system using an M-Audio Firewire 410 interface. A Neumann TLM 103 mic for main vocals and if desired an SM57 for a perc throat mic, and Dynaudio BM5A monitors ensure a high-quality interface to the recorded sound. The recording room is sound-treated just enough to eliminate the room reverb without throwing off the singer (ever sang in a completely reverb-deadenned room? It's eery...) And quality plug-ins includeing the Waves Gold package and Antares Auto-Tune (occasaionlly used but never overused of course!) are the tools that allow us to really bring out the quality and professionalism in your album.
